Just in time for fun in the sun, potentially toxic levels of benzene were found in 14 batches and 4 different brands of sunscreen. The level of benzene that is safe by FDA standards should be below 2 ppm and several batches tested contained between 2.78-6.26 ppm of benzene. Valisure LLC who conducted the testing examined 300 different product batches from 69 companies.
Popular brands were affected including Neutrogena, Sun Bum, CVS Health, Fruit of the Earth, Raw Elements, SunBurnt, Goodsense, Banana Boat, TopCare Everyday and EltaMD.
The following products were reported to contain higher than 2 ppm benzene:
Neutrogena: Ultra Sheer Weightless Sunscreen Spray SPF 100+ (2 lots) and SPF 70 (3 lots); Beach Defense Oil-free Body Sunscreen Spray SPF 100 (3 lots); Invisible Daily Defense Body Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 60+; Beach Defense Spray Body Sunscreen SPF 50
Sun Bum: Cool Down Gel
CVS Health: After-sun Aloe Vera Soothing Spray (2 lots)
Fruit of the Earth: Aloe Vera Gel

Valisure LLC’s findings prompted them to petition for the FDA to take action to recall these contaminated batches and implement clear limits for benzene contamination in products.
Be sure to check your cabinets and beach bags just in case you purchased any of these products. Before you hit the mountains or the beach this summer, stock up on sunscreen that you know will be safe for you and your family.
I love our selection of zinc oxide mineral based sunscreens in tinted and non-tinted versions! Remember to reapply often when you’re out especially after swimming. Also, be sure to stay out of the sun in the days leading up to an appointment (and post treatment) to avoid complications. 😉
