Scarring: How To Prevent, Minimize and Treat

Scar (noun)

A mark left on the skin or within body tissue where a wound, burn, or sore has not healed completely and fibrous connective tissue has developed.

Everyone gets them and sometimes they can even come with a story. In this blog we will discuss the ways to prevent, minimize and treat scars.

Prevent:

Depending on the type of scar, preventative measures can be implemented to reduce the appearance. You know you have heard this one but the number one rule in preventing a scar is do not pick the scab. Keeping the area clean, hydrated and protected is recommended to prevent infection and hyperpigmentation. It’s particularly important to keep the skin covered and away from UV light as fresh skin healing is prone to hyperpigmentation from the heat and sun. Always use the maximum physical sun protection and cover with sun protective clothing as well. Remember to disclose any treatments, sun exposure and medications you are using prior to receiving professional skin treatments. This will ensure your treatment plan is appropriate for your skin type and condition and will reduce inflammation or contraindications.

Minimize:

Paying attention and taking care of your scars during the beginning stages of the wound or blemish is a critical time to minimize scarring and maximize healing. We love the Constitution Copper DNA Serum which has copper peptides, hyaluronic and antioxidants to feed the skin nutrients which help the cellular healing process. The beginning stages of a scar is a critical time for regenerating and nourishing and we love the Cocoon Moisturizing Cream to help protect and comfort the skin. If there is one thing to remember to use it would be a physical sun protection product. We love Ultra Zinc Body and Face Sunscreen Non-Tinted SPF as well as Ultra Zinc Body and Face Sunscreen Tinted SPF 40 if you would prefer a product that blends easily into the skin for a dewy glow.

Treat:

So the inflammation has subsided but it has left you with a scar - or a few. Now is the perfect time to start a treatment plan to have the visible scars reduced. Treating your skin professionally is the best way to go because the scars won’t stand a chance with microneedling. Most clients need multiple treatments for desired results and the recommended treatment plan will vary for each client and skin concern. Microneedling works wonders for acne scars and hyperpigmentation. In addition, it serves as an amazing anti-aging treatment which helps to plump collagen and reduce wrinkles -  microneedling is a win-win for the skin!
